Gear Couplings/ Mill Spindles

For more than 40 years, BSEW has been industry leader in designing and manufacturing custom gear spindles, gear couplings and special gearing.

Gear coupling is a component used to join two shafts together at their ends, allowing transmission of power. Gear coupling is such an efficient device that makes the shafts unable to disconnect with each other during operation. Joining two pieces of the rotating equipment, this device allows some degree of misalignment.

Application of Gear Couplings:

Gear coupling, a mechanical device designed with a flexible joint, is fixed to each shaft. This transmits the torque between two non collinear shafts. Having higher torque densities than universal joints, this is designed to be fitted a given space whereas universal joints induce lower vibrations.

Reckoned for feature of torsional rigid, this type of coupling is designed in two types: – completely flexible and flexible/rigid. The completely flexible gear coupling consists two hubs, one is with an external gear and other with an internal gear. On the other hand, the flexible/rigid coupling is designed with one flexible geared half and one rigid half that make it perfect for “floating shaft” applications. Gear couplings find their applications in rolling mill machinery and other industrial machines.

Mill Spindles

There are many types of spindles used in industrial applications. Rolling mill spindles are used to transfer the power from a gearbox or pinion stand to a set of mill rolls when a direct connection is not feasible or practical. Spindles are chosen based on their application for torque and speed.

BSEW spindles are custom-designed and used primarily on rolling mill drives ranging from heavy duty, hot reversing roughers to high speed cold mills. The spindles used on these drives are often limited by the minimum roll size, and they must handle high continuous loads. These spindles must also accommodate high misalignment angles due to the constant change in material thickness, roll size, and roll change requirements.

Our designs optimize mill spindles for the specific operating conditions. The high angle largely loaded steel mills benefit with less maintenance, lower cost, increased productivity and minimal failures.
